Audio Resources

Coming into this class, my only experience with audio is layering it on a movie in iMovie. Jad Abumrad talks about how the radio takes you in a different state of mind and paints images in the listeners’ minds. The radio connections people with co-imagining by putting certain images in a person`s mind. I whole heartedly agree with Abumrad, I believe listening to audio takes our mind somewhere else where we can image more and mentally process more with no outside distractions. His second talk is his take on storytelling and how it connects to ancient storytelling, when people used to gather around a campfire to listen to stories and they would enter a dreamlike state. With modern technology, we can recreate those dreamlike states by recording and sharing those ancient stories. In my childhood, I listened to ancient Greek myths on the radio in the car and they would give vivid descriptions of the scenes. Famous composers are renowned for their musical talent and the feelings and images that they invoke when we listen to them. Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons characterizes Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter through the use of the violin and musical conception.

Next, I looked at a few audio resources. Soundcloud is a free music and podcast platform that allows you to upload and share audio files for free. Soundcloud, to me, is pretty straight forward and simple to use, it is very similar to iTunes. The University of Mary Washington offers many resources for students to use, such as recording booth, equipment to check out, and audio tutorials at the Digital Knowledge Center. Despite working at the DKC, I have not practiced audio editing yet. What the DKC recommends for beginners and the easiest tool in audio editing is Audacity. Audacity is a free audio platform that allows you to record and edit audio media and comes with a tutorial website. HowSound is a podcast site that explains the process of producing a radio show.

Some other sources I looked were sources that offered free music and sound clips to download.

With all of these new terms, Radio Glossary of Terminology offers detailed definitions of each term. Learning something new such as audio editing seems overwhelming, but taking it step-by-step will ensure a successful product.
